East Belfast in the Great War

FREE

2pm

This talk will discuss East Belfast in The Great War through the prism of the 8th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, who served in the 36th (Ulster) Division. The 8th were formed in 1914 from the nucleus of the East Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force and went on to fight on the battlefields of the Western Front.

However, there was more to these men's lives than simply their experience in the war. This talk will show that by examining the lives of the soldiers of the 8th Royal Irish Rifles, we can learn much about life in East Belfast, before, during and after The Great War.
